So can we talk about how much I disliked this issue

Thats right, I be dwelling

Serious. Jason Todd is a red-headed Thor-looking man-god who barely covers up his junk with a tiny towel and reads Pride and Prejudice? And he is the only good looking guy in this prison full of dehumanized, animal-esque ugly criminals… It reeks of bad fan-fiction.

I actually liked the character in Morrison’s arc. Philip Tan’s art was terrible, and he was a pimply faced geek in a pill costume, but he actually came across as a tragically flawed character instead of some infallible anti-hero. He was interesting. And i’m not saying this as a Morrison fanboy. The Revenge Red Hood arc was probably my least favorite in Grant’s run. And I loved Under the Red Hood by Winick. Goddamn though. Maybe this arc will get better.

So wait. You read a story about him being attractive (and he’s not the only one at the prison, though the others were peripheral characters) and reading Pride and Prejudice and that’s what makes this bad fanfiction? Wow. Because all those stories I’ve read about the extremely gorgeous looking women with the exact same face and body shape in sexy poses must make them bad fanfiction, too, amirite?

And for fuck’s sake, can we actually get rid of the terms Mary Sue/Marty Stu and fanfiction as insults?

for fuck’s sake

judd winick did not invent batman

grant morrison did not invent batman

anything past Kane & Finger is literally fanfiction

they are fiction written by people other than the original creators of the characters

ALL BATMAN COMICS are by definition fanfiction

this was a bad issue because jason was too sexy

i liked jason better when he wasn’t sexy. being sexy made him boring

now i’m going to imply that it’s all fangirls’ fault and their fanfiction (ewww!!!!) is leaking into my comics

I never said Mary-Sue/Marty-Stu? I don’t know where you got that from. But yes, I used fan-fiction with a negative connotation. More specifically though, I said bad fan-fiction. I’m sure that there is a lot of well written stuff out there. I am homing in on author-insert, slash-fiction crowd. Stuff that isn’t well written. Not saying that people can’t like that stuff, but it generally serves to project the writer’s fetishes onto characters, sexual or otherwise. This is something I have been guilty of before, but i’m not writing something that is actually getting published. Winick was paid to write, and he didn’t do a good job.

My problems with this comic aren’t that he was too sexy or anything like that. That he is reading Pride and Prejudice isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good book. But these are, to me, indicative of writing meant to attract fan-girls. The real problem though is that there wasn’t enough substance to the comic, nothing deeper than what I perceive as fan-service outside of maybe the first conversation with Batman. This comic felt like a whole lot of nothing with a pretty wrapper. Like I said, I didn’t like Jason in Morrison’s comics because he was ugly. I liked him despite that because he was written in an interesting way.

And no, I don’t consider everything written after Kane and Finger fan-fiction. Where I draw the line for that is when someone is either getting paid to do it and the work is actually being published. Both of those things.

And I never implied that any of this is fan-girls faults. I’m implying that Judd Winick wrote a disappointing issue that read like something written by a fan-girl, which I personally dislike. Diehl w/ it.

But these are, to me, indicative of writing meant to attract fan-girls.

OH SHIT YOU MEAN SOMEONE ACTUALLY WANTS TO ATTRACT A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE OTHER THAN CISGENDER HETEROSEXUAL MEN. IN AN INDUSTRY THAT IS RAPIDLY DECLINING IN SALES.

SOMEONE STOP THIS WRITER NOW.

JUST PLEASE DO IT NOW CAUSE WE SURE DON’T NEED ANY OF THOSE FUCKING WOMEN READING OUR COMICS. KEEP THEM THE FUCK OUT.

Jesus, what an asshole. And let’s not forget his swipe at queer fans with the slash-fiction line in there.

OH MY GOD HOW DARE DC ATTEMPT TO TARGET ONE OF THEIR BOOKS TO FIFTY ONE PERCENT OF THE GODDAMN HUMAN POPULATION

those bastards!

There goes DC, acknowledging those LADEEZ again, with their LADY PARTS and whatnot! God forbid we neglect to cater to the Straight Male Comic Nerd for five minutes! DDDDDDDD8

I am tired of the vicious stereotype that girls who read comic books are the same as fan-girls. On behalf of all women, I am offended.

By the way, fan-boys are just as bad. Thats why I consider myself an avid reader of comic books, and not a fan-boy. I carry myself with a bit of dignity when I complain about why comic books aren’t just the way I like them on the internet.

good job being offended on behalf of all women that actual women are taking issue with your misogynistic bullshit
