I agreed with you until I got to the heteronormativity part. That’s you misconstruing things to make a problem that isn’t there. Without doubt, making a joke out of sexuality apart from “the norm” is certainly as bad as jokes about alcoholism…

I know what heteronormativity means (although I bothered to read the tags and get a better understanding). I’m just trying to see how heteronormativity was there at all and assumed OP thought it was being a joke somehow. I mean, the trolls are pretty much a big step away from heteronormativity (aren’t they?) in Homestuck. Perhaps OP seems them as a joke now? I don’t really know.

There is also just the fact that I’m pretty damn wrong here.

Yeah, there is definitely that fact.

The trolls, much as I love them, are still largely auxiliary to the story, and while they might be considered some kind of step, it’d hardly be a big one. A tiptoe, really. They create a potential for a break in heteronormativity, but in practice it’s been incredibly lacking! I mean, when you look at the large number of romantic advances, they’ve heavily favored m/f pairings, m/m being basically painted as a joke, f/f being generally unrequited, Hussie making incredibly gross meta on the subject.

And then you get the new kids tossed into the mix, each one introducing us in the boldest terms possible how incredibly het they are? Man, Homestuck is hella heteronormative. It’s given little more than tiny scraps to indicate otherwise.
